Payroll administrators beware! There’s a new twist on an email phishing scam. Hackers are currently taking advantage of tax filing season by sending emails to payroll personnel as if it was from the CEO or other top level staff asking for information about employees’ W-2s. The emails have asked for things like “copies of the W-2s to review” or “a full list of employees that includes address, SSN, DOB and salary.” The emails typically have the full email signature block of the CEO. Warn your staff that they should not email personal data! If the CEO needs this information, it can be hand-delivered or transferred through a secure file sharing system.
