Fundraising Across State Lines

If your organization is asking for donations in multiple states, you may need to register in those states.  Each state has its own rules, so be sure you do a little research before sending fundraising campaign mailouts across state lines or even applying for a grant in some cases.  Most states don’t require registration if your total donations are below a certain threshold, but watch out for the states that require audited financials if total revenues from all states exceeds relatively low thresholds (ie. New York).  Texas doesn’t require an audit, but you do need to renew your registration with the Secretary of State every four years.  If your organization is fundraising in several states, consider filing the multistate registration form (URS) to simplify the process.
